Peripheral neuropathy can become extremely painful and debilitating, especially at night. So often we are asked if neuropathy can be treated with foot rubs or massage. In my experience with patients, we have found significant improvement of symptoms, especially pain from the massage.
The theories behind this improvement include stimulating the nerves and muscles and alternative therapies will say it “calls into play the body’s natural life force.” Although I believe the healing potential of the body is underutilized, the massage actually has a medical basis for improving the symptoms. Studies have shown improved blood circulation, increasing oxygen capacity by up to 15%, allowing muscles to relax and increase of endorphins (which treat the pain symptoms).
So basically, massage can improve neuropathy symptoms at least, and may even improve the blood flow to the nerves allowing healing.
My recommendation would be to enjoy the massage and the associated relaxing effects, and in many cases it will help your neuropathy.
