Exercise Causing Neuropathy

All of us have heard of carpal tunnel syndrome and been told of the numbness to the hand associated with this problem.  A similar condition can occur in the foot, called tarsal tunnel syndrome, that produces numbness to the foot and possibly even associated severe pain.    Another more common condition, however, is often aggravated by exercise or even shoes worn.   This condition is called a neuroma, or inflammed nerve that causInflammed nerve, Neuromaes pain and numbness extending to the toes.  It is most often described as numbness, burning or tingling that occurs with certain shoes or certain activities.   You may even feel like a small ball is in the area of the foot.

 

This condition is as we described a neuroma, or Morton’s Neuroma.   As the bones come together because of shoes or even just the way you walk, the symptoms present and the nerve starts to inflame, making the presentation become more constant or regular.  Pressure is the primary cause, so wider shoes or insoles reducing the pressure to the area can often resolve the symptoms.  There are multiple treatment options that should allow the symptoms to improve without limiting your ability to exercise…
